HOPKINS - James (Jim) Albert Hewett, 81, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday evening, August 14 at his home, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, August 17 at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street in Columbia with Rev. Mark Williams of Lebanon United Methodist Church officiating.

There will be a visitation prior to the service, starting at 10:00 AM.

Jim donated his body to science, with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine benefiting from his generosity.

His ashes will be interred at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia SC at a later date.

Jim was born in Shallotte, NC on December 7, 1931, son of the late Prince Albert Hewett and Evie Viola Hewett.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sue; his children, Kelly Hewett (Randall Rose) of Knoxville, TN, Jamie Hewett Keller (Rudy) and Heath Hewett (Nikki), both of Columbia; two grandsons, Gabriel and Keith Keller; a loving caregiver and step-granddaughter, Austin Keller of Columbia; one sister, Lois Ann Owens of Shallotte, NC, two brothers, Janek Hewett (Linda) of Exum, NC, and Hampton Hewett (Shirley) of Supply, NC; many nieces and nephews, cousins and loving friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Keith and Leonard, his sister Helen, his brother-in-law Spurgeon, and his sister-in-law Fesie. Jim graduated from Shallotte High School in NC in 1951 and attended North Carolina State University. He served his country for 40 years in the military. His military career began in the US Navy during the Korean War as a jet mechanic on the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. He later served in the US Air Force at Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC. Finally he served for nearly 30 years as a full-time technician in the South Carolina Air National Guard at McEntire JNGS in Eastover, SC.

He loved woodturning, gardening, fishing, his church, his neighborhood, bird watching, making furniture, and giving of his time and wisdom to friends, neighbors, or anyone in need. Most of all, he loved and cared for his family.
