James "Jim" Garland Ayers Sr., 81, of N. NC Highway 150, died Friday, August 16, 2013, at Hinkle Hospice House, following a period of declining health.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013, at Tyro United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Randy Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service and other times at the home.

Mr. Ayers was born January 24, 1932, in Davidson County, to Thomas Hubbard and Leona Williams Ayers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He also had worked at Lexcom as a landscaper for 31 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, James Garland Ayers Jr.; sister, Enid Ayers Cope; brother, Kenneth Aubrey Ayers; and a grandson, Michael Timothy Pilcher.

Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Louise Beck Ayers; daughter, Laura Ayers Pilcher and husband Tim; grandchildren, Melissa Newton and husband Zack, Jake Newman, Daniel Pilcher, David Pilcher and Tracy King; great-grandchildren, Abigail Newton, Analia King, Bradley King and Evan King; an aunt, Annie Lanning; and numerous nieces and nephews.
