Son of William E. Clauson and Bessie George Clauson.

Uncle of Werner Erhard (born as Jack Rosenberg) founder of est also known as Erhard Seminars Training, being the brother of his mother Dorothy Selma Clauson Rosenberg. James Clauson is thanked in the "Acknowledgements" section of the book Werner Erhard: The Transformation of a Man, the Founding of Est written by William Warren Bartley.

James S. Clauson served in the United States Navy during World War II. He received a Purple Heart during his service.

Clauson was a former Police Captain in the Philadelphia Police Department, Pennsylvania.

He was married to Katherine Mary McGrath Clauson in 1946 in Philadelphia; they had eight children together.

He continued working in law enforcement until he passed away in 1981.
