Clara Achtemeier June 17, 1895 - Sept. 21, 1986
Mrs. Clara B. Achtemeier. 91, formerly of Monticello, died Sunday Sept. 21, 1986 at the
New Glarus Home where she had been a resident since June 2, 1983. Born June 17, 1895, in Manitowoc, she was the daughter of John E. and Minnie (Beste) Barnstein. She graduated from Manitowoc High School in 1911 and attended a year of normal
school.
She married the Rev. Arthur R. Achtemeier June 16, 1921, in Manitowoc. After marriage
they resided in Chene, Kan., Lincoln, Nebr., Kohler and Monticello from 1938-1959. In 1965
they moved to Ohio for six years, serving interim pastorates before retiring to Monticello in
1971. She was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ and its Missionary Society, Ladies Aid and the Friendship Circle. She was a former member of the board of directors of the national Women's Guild of the United Church of Christ. She was secretary of the national board from 1942-1955. During her residency at Monticello she directed the senior choir of the Washington Church and all the choirs at Zwingli Church. She also directed a choir in Farmersville. Ohio.
Surviving are a son, the Rev. Dr. Paul Achtemeier, Richmond, Va., two grandchildren and
two great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aug. 2, 1975; four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Zwingli United Church of Christ Monticello,
with the Rev. Erwin H. Pegel officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sylvan Bidlingmaier, Otto Graber, Kermit Kammerer, Dr. C. J. Klooster.
