WINDBER — SPENCER– Wendy L., 48, Windber, died Oct. 8, 2011, at Windber Hospice after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Born Feb. 7, 1963, in Johnstown, daughter of J. Ted and Beatrice (McCleester) Hollern. Survived by parents, Windber. Loving wife of Robert Spencer, Windber, for 23 years. Also survived by brothers, Craig, Scott (Donna) and Brett (Christine); numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and in-laws, John and Val Spencer. Predeceased by beloved pets, Koki and Cody, who are waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. Graduate of WAHS, where she was a member of NHS. Licensed property and casualty insurance agent, CISR designation. Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and was in remission for a number of years before the cancer metastasized to her bones, but she remained stable until November 2007, when the cancer began to spread again. Wendy was always very positive and felt she could win out over this terrible disease, but lost her battle. Wendy started her work career as a pharmacy technician at Windber Medical Center, later transferring to the data processing department before switching to the public relations department. In 1994, she joined her father as an agent at Hollern and Koontz Insurance Agency, Windber. Wendy was very active in the Windber community serving as board member of Eureka Coal Heritage Foundation and for a number of years was co-chair of the Miner's Memorial Day committee along with her friend, Carol Burnsworth. She also served on Windber Medical Center's institutional review board, infection control committee and patient advisory board and also was a member of the focus group for the development of the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center. After being diagnosed with cancer, she became very involved in fundraising efforts to help find a cure. Wendy was the chair and later co-chair for the Windber Relay for Life for four years. She also was the team captain for the "Spencer for Hire" relay team. Her team was always in the top three fundraising teams. She also served as a committee member of the Pink Ribbon Ball for five years until her health prevented her from participating. Wendy always reached out to other survivors, especially those who were newly diagnosed. She joined the Women's Cancer Support Group in 2000 and learned that no one understands what a cancer patient goes through like someone who has been through it themselves. Wendy's interests include daily yoga, traveling, reading, and enjoying animals, especially dogs, and spending time with her family. The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Meek & Dalla Valle Funeral Home Inc., Windber. Funeral service will he held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Whalley Chapel on the UPJ campus, the Rev. David McGee, officiating. Entombment, Richland Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the Windber Health Care Foundation for the benefit of Windber Hospice and the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center, 600 Somerset Ave., Windber, Pa. 15963.
