George J. Shirey Jr.

George J. Shirey, Jr., 90, passed from this life Monday, January 12, 2009, after a short illness. He had been a resident of Santa Fe, Texas for 7 years, previously of Andrews, North Carolina.

Born September 28, 1918, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, to George J. Shirey and Lovell Louise Hays Shirey, he was the eldest of 6 children. George graduated from El Reno High School, El Reno, Oklahoma and served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII in Puerto Rico and Guam. He had been employed as an air conditioning/refrigeration mechanic and retired in 1980, from Harrison-Orr Air Conditioning, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. During his life, George lived in Ft. Worth, Texas, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Falconhead Resort near Marietta, Oklahoma, Andrews, North Carolina, nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains, and finally Santa Fe, Texas.

During retirement, George traveled extensively outside of the continental U.S. to Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, China, Canada and the Canary Islands. He was a huge fan of Oklahoma Sooner football all his life, attending regular season and bowl games. He was a member of Arcadia First Baptist Church, the Santa Fe Senior Citizens Club, a life member of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #344, dedicating over 57 years to his trade, and a life member of the VFW Post #5400, Hitchcock, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wives, Orel Dot Phillips Shirey and Frances Autry Shirey.

Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Guerrero and husband, Rudy of Santa Fe; sisters and brothers, Mildred Lorenzen, El Reno, Oklahoma; Robert Hays Shirey and wife, Mary Lu, Ardmore, Oklahoma; Margaret Moorman, Kerrville, Texas; Rev. William Carrol Shirey and wife, Shirley, Estes Park, Colorado, and James W Shirey and wife, Judi, South Lake, Texas; uncle, John Robert Hays and wife, Ann of Houston; aunt, Marie Peck of Weslaco, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2009, at Arcadia First Baptist Church, 14828, Hwy 6, with Dr. Rick Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery, 10708 Hwy 6, with Rev. William Shirey presiding.
