Born in Yerevan, he left to study medicine in Kiev. Completing his studies he settled in Baku in 1919 while it was still an independent country. In 1922 he moved to Nakhchivan (now part of Iran) where he performed the first profession medical surgery in the history of Nakhchivan. He returned to Baku and in 1930 earned his PhD. He was promoted to be the Head of Department of Surgery at the Azerbaijan Medical University where he served for the next 45 years.
