Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 1st Illinois Volunteer Cavalry and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster at Camp Butler, Illinois in August 1861. Attached to the Department of the Missouri in 1862, he went on to the participate in the Battle of Pea Ridge, expeditions to Fayetteville, Talbot's Ferry, and General William T. Sherman's Yazoo River Expedition in Arkansas. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry in early 1864, he led his command through the expedition of Colliersville, Tennessee to Okolona, Mississippi and operations back to Gravely Springs, Arkansas. He was brevetted Brevet Brigadier General, US Volunteer on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services" and was mustered out with his regiment at Camp Butler, Illinois on October 18, 1865. A trained lawyer long active in politics, he drafted the platform that became the basis for the Republican Party in the state off Illinois, a party that eventually produced President Abraham Lincoln.
