Vivian Lee Barzee Westerbur, 71, of Sedona, Arizona, formerly of Roberts, Idaho, passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a long struggle with cancer Wednesday, August 14, 2013, in Idaho Falls. She was born May 31, 1942, in Roberts to George and Vera Lake Barzee. She was the third of nine children and lived at Birch Creek until 1943, when the family moved to Roberts so the children could attend school. She attended Roberts Elementary and High School, where she graduated as salutatorian and learned exceptional typing and shorthand skills. When she was about 9 years old, she worked in the potatoes and earned enough money to buy herself an accordion, which became her pride and joy. Thus began her lifelong love of music. She played her accordion in various bands, on radio and television shows, and for the pleasure of everyone who knew her. She could play anything by ear and taught herself to also play piano, guitar, keyboards, steel guitar and violin. Her favorite part of visiting Idaho was being part of the family "jam sessions." After high school graduation, she attended San Diego State University, then returned to Idaho Falls and worked for the Phillips Petroleum headquarters office. In 1962, she moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she worked for Boeing as a Teleflex operator. Wherever she went, she met other musicians, and Tacoma was no different. She even played with Ernest Tubb's back-up band on a country-western television program. While in Tacoma, she met Clarence "Bud" Westerbur, and they married October 28, 1964, in the Roberts Grange Hall. They moved to Phoenix and later to Prescott, where they started their family. Lisa Dale was born on April 4, 1966, followed by Robin Wade (Robbie) on April 21, 1970. They were her pride and joy, right up there with her accordion! She always loved swimming--to the point that her nickname was "Finn"--so, naturally, she loved taking her kids to the lake. She taught her kids to swim and fish, play softball and appreciate the outdoors. Vivian enjoyed being a homemaker and also kept the books for the family construction business. After Bud's death in 2000, she worked at Walgreen's in Mesa, Cottonwood and Camp Verde, Arizona, for 10 years, where she earned the "Most Valuable Employee" award. Obviously, she always did her very best and gave whatever she did 100 percent. After falling and breaking her hip February 12, 2012, she moved in with her daughter, Lisa, in Sedona, where she stayed for the next year and a half. It was a nice treat to have some mother-daughter time. In her later years, she enjoyed crocheting, watching classical movies, eating strawberry ice cream, playing cards and, of course, playing music. In June 2013, she returned to Idaho to spend her last days with her brothers and sisters, who lovingly cared for her with the help of Encompass Hospice and Parkwood Meadows Assisted Living Center. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robbie; her husband, Bud; two brothers, Doyle and Reuben Barzee; and a sister, Maxine Barzee. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Daniel Hochstein); three brothers, Bruce (Cheri) Barzee, Allen (Evelyn) Barzee and Bryant (Christy) Barzee; two sisters, Larraine (Kent) Taylor; Joyce (LeRoy) Jardine; and numerous nephews and nieces.
