Francis for a short period after his marriage, worked at the Union Switch & Signal Company in nearby Swissvale, Pennsylvania. It has been told that they soon relocated, taking his bride on a wagon full of supplies from Kittanning to Loop.
In 1882 he built his house and store in Smicksburg. After living there for 22 years, they moved to a farm on the Mahoning Creek below Smicksburg.
During his life he served as School Director of the Township and a referee on land values taken over by the county.
In Smicksburg, he had been a Squire, member of the I. O. O. F.
Francis was a member of the Episcopalian Church.
Francis also had served as the Justice of the Peace.
