Samuel Clark Black was a Union Corporal for the 151th Illinois Infantry. He was 21 years old when the American Civil War began in 1861. He passed away in Coupeville, Washington just eight days after his 67th birthday. His story is told by the award winning essay by his granddaughter, Ester Boyer in 1914. Ester was sympathetic to the legacy of the Civil War and the veterans she'd grown up surrounded by including her other grandfather, Lawrence Boyer of the Union Pennsylvania 177th Infantry (He too is buried at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville).
Her essay made headlines on May 23, 1914. It mentions Samuel's and Lawrence's names in her essay. Sadly, Ester passes away in 1922 at the age of 23. Samuel's story and his grave have long never been forgotten since then.
