A. B. COATES, furniture dealer, was born December 18, 1836, in Trumbull County, Ohio, where he lived and followed farming until 1851; moved to Grant County, Wis., and engaged in farming until October 5, 1861; enlisted as a private in Company F, Tenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged, July 7, 1863; cause, disability; returned to Grant County, Wis., where he farmed until January, 1865, when he went to Dallas County, Iowa, where he engaged in the furniture business until 1868, when he moved to Northern Iowa, in Cerro Gordo County. Again engaged in the furniture business until the spring of 1872, when he came to Osborne county, Kan., where he followed carpentering until 1877, when he established the present business. He was married November 2, 1860, to Miss Clarinda Chestnut. They have three children - Clarence H., Hannah E., and A. Selma. He was elected Trustee of Penn Township, two years; Justice of the Peace of Penn Township, two years; is a member of the K. of P. and of the G.A.R., Mitchell Post No. 69; also of the A.O.U.W.
