C. Lawrence HIgdem, 74 Portland, ND, died Wednesday, September 9, 1998 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Calmer Lawrence Higdem was born on November 23, 1923, the son of Carl and Lisa (Hagen) Higdem in Golden Lake Township, Steele County, ND near Finley, ND. He grew up and attended school in Portland, ND. He joined the United States Army, and served from 1943-1945 with the 20th Engineer Combat Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon and distinguished unit badge.

He married Alice Thuen on January 4, 1948 in Portland, ND. He worked at Haugom Hardware in Portland for many years, later purchasing it and operating as Higdem and Thuen Hardware for five years. He later worked for the Mayville-Portland school district as Head Custodian for seventeen years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Mayville VFW, a volunteer fireman for many years and a 53-year member of the Anderson-Hefta American Legion Post #93 in Portland, ND.

He is survived by his wife, Alice, Portland, ND; two daughters, Linda (Robert) Godejohn, Williston, ND, Diane (Truman) Ulland, Mayville; four grandchildren, Lynn, Laurie and Katie Godejohn, Williston, Jason (Heidi) Ulland and one great granddaughter Ashly Ulland of Williston; four step grandchildren, Keith, Steve, & Merle Ulland, & Cindy Kraft; two step great-grandchildren, Danielle & Nicholas Kraft; four brothers, Irvin (Beatrice), Portland, ND, Joseph (Mary), Wheatland, Wyoming, Maynard, Oakland, CA, and Richard, Elgin, ND; three sisters, Irene Lidstrom, Judy (Richard) Beck, both of Portland, ND, and Lorraine (Allan) Strom, Graham, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Theodore and Robert.
