FUNERAL OF EDGAR M POE 2 PM TODAY
Last Sad Rites For Well Known Taylor County Resident - Rev. Zumbrunnen Conducts Services

The last sad rites were held over the remains of the late Edgar Marion Poe, well known resident of Route 2, who died at 12:30 pm Saturday following a complicated illness at 2 O'clock this afternoon when funeral services were conducted from the home, Rev. Thomas M Zumbrunnen, pastor of St Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church of this city, who was former pastor of the Haymond M.E. church, officiating.

The remains were laid to rest in the Luzadder cemetery near the old home in the presence of a large assemblage of mourning relatives and neighbors.

Edgar Marion Poe was born December 20, 1843 in that part of Monongalia county, Virginia from which Taylor county was formed less than a year later. He was the son of James S Poe and Phoebe (Parnall) Poe, who came to Western Virgina from Faquier county with the former's father, William Poe, some time before 1840.

The father of William Poe and great grandfather of Edgar Marion Poe was Samuel Poe of Faquier county, a veteran of the French War in which war he was wounded and also a veteran of the American Revolution. Samuel Poe was first cousin of Quartermaster General David Poe of the Revolution, who was the close friend of General LaFayette and the grandfather of Edgar Allan Poe, the poet.

The Poe family is of Norman origin, but the ancestors of the American Poes, including Alexander Poe, the father of Samuel Poe, migrated to America from an adopted home in Ireland in the early part of the eighteenth century.

Edgar M Poe was the fourth of a family of ten of whom three survive him, Mrs Sarah Duncan of Henrietta, Oklahoma, Mrs William W McDaniel of Cecil; and Robert M Poe of Potwin, Kansas. Another brother, Nathan Poe was the father of Benjamin and Clarence Poe and Miss Lucy Poe and Mrs. Clay V Miller of the city.

Mr. Poe maintained a continuous residence in Taylor county, where, except for some years spent as a trainman in the employ of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, he has followed the occupation of farming.

He was one of the three sons in his father's family who served their country as Union soldiers in the Civil War, the older, William having been a captain, and Nathan a private. Edgar himself served thru out the war, first in Company F of the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry and afterwards in the 6th West Virginia Calvary.

On February 27, 1873 he was married to Miss Amelia Williams, a member of another pioneer family of the county, and to this union were born six children, Mrs. I T Shackleford of Route 2, Miss Emily A Poe, at home, Mrs. Jed W Robinson of this city, James Arthur Poe of Route 2, Miss Ursula L Poe of this city and Harrison M Poe who died in 1902 at the age of 13. Mrs. Poe died in 1889. Mr. Poe married as his second wife Miss Magdalene Heldeman who survives him with three children, Mrs. George Newcome of this city and Hugh and Edna minor children. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.

Mr. Poe was widely acquainted and was admired by all as a man of simple honesty and of well settled, frank and outspoken convictions on questions of both public and private concern. He zealously contended at all times for the preservation of those well grounded American ideals of individual liberty that have been recognized as the bulwark of our government, and he latterly often expressed his grave concern that present day tendencies were toward the breaking down of those ideas and the substitution of a paternal government. Such is the type of the rank and file of citizenship that is to rapidly passing and that can least be spared.
