Nov 1888

At eleven o'clock Monday night, Daniel Phillips, one of Newark's oldest citizens, passed away, aged 89 years and 6 months. Eight weeks ago to a day, his wife died, and two weeks ago to a day, his brother James.

Mr. Phillips had lived long in this town, coming here from Columbia county, and had been an esteemed member of the Baptist church since 1849, and a deacon for many years. He was a most estimable citizen, all his life.

Of the family, there remain four daughters: Mrs. Kate Turner, of Deadwood; Mrs. Ellen Winegar, of California; Mrs. E. R. Kelley and Miss Phoebe, of this village, the latter the faithful keeper of her father's home.

The funeral will be held at the residence, on Miller street, promptly at 10 o'clock, Thursday a.m., and the remains will be buried in Willow Avenue Cemetery.
