In 1980, Matt married Yvonne (Grimm) Schafer.

Matt will always be remembered for his love of animals and nature. He especially loved training horses and dogs. It was with great pride Matt would often buy a new kind of animal to raise on his farm so he could learn more about the kind of animal. It was a great day in Matt's world, when a man could take his dog and go for a ride on his horse in the country or go on a hunting trip.
Matt will be sorely missed by many family and friends.
