PESHTIGO, Wis. - Nancy Louise (Smaney) Cowling, 79, most recently a resident of Rennes West Nursing home, Peshtigo, ended her suffering and went to heaven with the angels on Aug. 7, 2013, at the nursing home.

She was born March 3, 1934, in Niagara, Wis., to the late John and Anna Mae (LaPlante) Smaney. She graduated from Niagara High School in 1952. Nancy married the late David W. Cowling in 1952 in Niagara. They had four children together.

Nancy was employed as a secretary at Garden Village and Woodland Elementary Schools, retiring in 1996 after 25 years. She lived in Kingsford and was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church until her retirement when she moved to Marinette, Wis., to be with her daughters.

Nancy loved to watch any football, especially the Green Bay Packers. She spent a lot of time knitting for her grandchildren. In the past year she took up bingo at the nursing home and loved it. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one sister, Virginia "Ginger" Brault of Niagara; her four children, Debbi (John) Fiorucci of Iron Mountain, Michael (Pam) Cowling of Rapid City, S.D., Robert (Cindy) Cowling of Bacliff, Texas, and Mary (Scott) Edwards of Marinette; 12 grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Cheney, Marinette, Faith (Jason) Roell, Iron Mountain, Heather Fiorucci, Astoria, N.Y., Megan (Kyle) Wangerin, Menominee, Ashley (Adam Gerondale) Berg, Seattle, Jayce and Kayde Cowling, Bacliff, Adam Cowling, Rapid City, Crystle (Aaron Kurz) Edwards, Marinette, Joshua, Elisha and Zackary Edwards of Menominee; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica (Scott Kaster) Berger, Crysta Berger, Logan Valentine, Elizabeth Harding, Talia Cheney, Amara Kurz, Lance Kurz, Chloe Roell and Lena Roell.

Nancy passed away waiting on the arrival of her 10th great-grandchild, Avery Gene Wangerin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charles Smaney; one brother-in-law, Merton Brault; and her furry companion, Jasmine.

Nancy fought three different forms of cancer for 12 years. She taught her family how to be strong and fight. She was also a hero to her children and grandchildren.



Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery.
