OBITUARY-
Memorial services for Barbara Kay White, 69, of Austin, Minn. will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin.
Barbara White died Friday morning, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Austin Medical Center. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, which would have been her 70th birthday.
Barbara Kay Smith was born Sept. 6, 1934, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Ira E. "Dietz" Smith and LaVonne C. Smith. She graduated from Austin High School in 1952 and was always active in all of her class reunions.
She attended and was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, where she married Gordon White on Oct. 25, 1952.
She was hired as a secretary at the Hormel office in June of 1952, where she worked until October of 1953, when she quit to give birth. She was 1 of 13 women in that office that gave birth within that period and these women started to meet monthly in a secretary/coffee club, which continues to this day. Barbara returned to work for the Austin school system as a teacher's aide from 1974 until she retired in 1994, where she took a personal interest in many of her students. The first three years of the 1980s she was the cheerleader advisor. During that period the cheerleaders were picked as the best squad in the state, which made them eligible for the national competition in Pennsylvania, where they finished third in the nation. Barbara was involved in the following activities: In 1958 she was the chairman of the Community Ambassador Program and in 1960 was president of the Xi Kappa Chapter Beta Sigma Phi. She worked at the National Barrow Show for the Hormel Company for several years.
Barbara was a very generous and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to entertain and was a wonderful hostess.
Survivors include her husband: Gordon White of Austin; two sons: Michael White and his wife, Judy, of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Gary White and his wife, Sara, of Austin, Minn.; daughter: LeAnn Massey and her husband, Brian, of Sacramento, Calif.; six grandchildren: Christine, Tyler, Jenna, David, Mick and Stefanie. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, an aunt, several cousins, a niece and a nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her half-brother, William Carlson.
Barbara was a consummate people-person who wanted to not only know everybody, but their family trees as well. She is now in heaven doing just that. She will be greatly missed by all.
The family prefers memorials to Pulmonary Fibrosis Research at Mayo or Our Saviors Lutheran Church Youth Group.
