Rothermel was the radio operator on B-18A bomber #37-521 with the 43rd Bombardment Group, 63rd Bombardment Squadron. They were returning to Bangor Army Air Field in Maine after bombing practice at Langley Field in Virginia. The pilot had difficulty locating the airfield in the fog and finally radioed that he was diverting to Portland. They apparently had trouble finding their way and eventually tried to make an emergency landing in heavy woods ten miles south of Springfield Maine. The plane crashed, killing all four aboard instantly.
