Actress. She is best remembered for her recurring portrayal of the wholesome Mrs. Barrington in the sitcom "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin". Born unto a respectable family, after attaining her degree in theatrical arts from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, New York, she began her in stock companies. After being befriended by George Bernard Shaw, he was so impressed by her charm, poise, and professionalism, that he arranged for her to advance in her career appearing on an off Broadway as a leading lady. For the next 40 years, she would go on to flourish as a character actress appearing in over 70 stage productions; often typecast as wives, mothers, nurses, secretaries, spinsters, nannies, best friends, matriarchs, historical figures, aristocrats, snobs, educators, foreigners, villains, heroines, mythical beings, royalty, love interests, eccentrics, clergywomen, and matriarchs. She appeared in such plays as "The Wicked Earl," "Blackmail," "Street Scene," "Elizabeth the Queen," "Grand Hotel," "Dinner at Eight," "The Eleventh Hour," "Wednesday's Child," "Paradise Lost," "Stage Door," "Red Harvest," "The Corn is Green," "Morning's at Seven," "Johnny Belinda," "Arsenic and Old Lace," "The Skin of Our Teeth," "Sorry, Wrong Number," "Harvey," "Deep Are the Roots," "Peace in Our Time," "The Heiress," "Summer and Smoke," "Murder at the Vicarage," "Who Is Sylvia?," "Buy Me Blue Ribbons," "The Mousetrap," "Picnic," "The Matchmaker," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Long Day's Journey into Night," "The Shifting Heart," "Suddenly Last Summer," "The Glass Menagerie," "Waiting in the Wings," and "Hedda Gabbler". During her career, she was an honorary member of Actors Equity, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, was a chairwoman for her local charters of the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society, had been a supporter of the California State Democratic Committee, was a regular parishioner of the Episcopal church, had been a theatrical instructor for both the Pasadena Playhouse and the Neighborhood Playhouse, and she was married to fellow actor Herbert Heyes from 1913 to 1930 (their union produced two children, one of whom was screenwriter Herbert Heyes, Jr.). In 1964, she retired from acting following a rare film appearance in "Kitten With a Whip", and for the remainder of her life she went on to live comfortably in the suburbs and was a generous benefactor for several schools, hospitals, and libraries, until her death from the complications of natural causes.
