Grace A. Harmsen, 81, of Davenport, passed away Friday, March 31, 2000, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home in Bettendorf.


Visitation will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 2, at Runge Mortuary and Crematory in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the nursing home or a favorite charity in her memory.


Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 3, at Runge Mortuary and Crematory in Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa.


Grace Amanda Daufeldt was born October 24, 1918, in Cedar County, the daughter of Martin and Emma (Freese) Daufeldt. She was educated in the Cedar County schools. She married Alvin Ferdinand Harmsen on October 16, 1937, in Davenport. Together they farmed in Cedar County, near Bennett for 33 years until they retired in 1973, and moved to Davenport. Alvin preceded her in death on March 8, 1997. She and Alvin enjoyed dancing and attended many dances held in dance halls and ballrooms in the Quad-Cities area during their married life. Their favorite band was the Lyle Beaver band. They also enjoyed taking trips to Hawaii during the winter months.


Surviving are two daughters, Deanna Harmsen of Davenport and Betty (Tyrone Parker) Harmsen of Omaha, NE; four sons, Robert Harmsen and Calvin (Patricia) Harmsen, both of Davenport, Gary (Dr. Betty) Harmsen of Omaha, NE, and Richard (Marjorie) Harmsen of Durant; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise (Paul) Schmelzer of Pleasant Prairie, Dorothy Hermann of Muscatine and Eva Alpen of Durant; one brother, Alvin (Lucy) Daufeldt of Durant; one sister-in-law, Amelia Daufeldt of Durant; one brother-in-law, Harold (Dorothy) Harmsen of Tipton; and several nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, one sister, Cathryn Wiese, one brother, Harvey Daufeldt and three brothers-in-law, Glenn Hermann, Arnold Alpen and Robert Wiese.
