Daughter of Jane Butler (b. Massachusetts 1808, d. NC 1864) and John Anderson Brookfield (b. New Jersey 1808, d. at sea 1864; occupation in 1850, Sailor). Her parents married in Craven Co., NC, March 28, 1833.

She was a school teacher at the New Bern Academy.

She was listed in the 1850 US Census in New Bern, Craven Co., NC, with her parents and four siblings as:
Rachael Brookfield, single, f, 14, b. NC.

She was listed in the 1860 US Census in New Bern, Craven Co., NC, with her mother and four siblings as:
Rachael Brookfield, single, f, 23, b. NC.

She was listed in the 1900 US Census in New Bern, Craven Co., NC, with her brother-in-law Henry A. Breson as:
Rachel Brookfield, sister-in-law, single, f, 65, b. NC; School Teacher.

Her obituary was published in the local New Bern newspapers, NB Daily Journal and NB Weekly Journal, multiple times from 11/1/1904-11/3/1905.

Summer School.

Miss Rachel C. Brookfield will open a Summer School in the Newbern Academy on Monday, July 10, to continue about seven weeks. Terms 50 cents per week. Pupils will be received any day for a week time.

The discipline and methods of the regular scholastic year, will be changed as much as practicable, so that it may still seem like vacation and recreation to the children.

The teacher will strive, while giving instructions and aiming at progress to make the school room a happy place. Special attention will be given to letter writing, reading history and descriptive geography, spelling and reading.

Attention given to other branches as parents may request.
