Lawrence "Larry" Walter Otto, 87, of Burlington died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Burlington Care Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1920, in rural Burlington, he was the son of Walter Fred and Ella Thye Otto. On July 18, 1947, he married Virginia Mae Bohlken in Burlington.

Mr. Otto owned and operated Otto-Matic Water Specialists. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater in England, France and Germany. He was a combat veteran with in Company A, 820th Engineer Aviation Battalion from from 1942 to 1945. He served in the glider troop and was honorably discharged on Oct. 3, 1945. He was a 1938 graduate of Burlington High School, and he attended Burlington Business College. He was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and on numerous boards. He was a member of Gideons International, Blackhawk Restorers and Roamin' Hawks, and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, boating, traveling, camping, antique cars and tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia M. Otto of Burlington; three daughters, Susan L. Donovan of Wever, Diane R. Shaffer of Silver Spring, Md., and Karen E. Otto of Chicago, Ill.; two sons, Paul R. Otto of Birmingham, Ala., and David Lawrence Otto of Burlington; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Henry "Hank" L. Otto of Spencerville, Ohio.

His was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral for Mr. Otto will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Oak Street Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jason Unzicker, Jason Bollback and Gregg Shaffer officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Oak Street Baptist Church, Gideons International and Disabled American Veterans.
