Born September 4, 1920, to the late George Michael and Catherine Dempsey Kelly, she graduated from Holy Rosary High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton, Pa., and then joined the Naval Nursing Corps, serving from 1944-1946.
She was a longtime Hampton resident where she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its St. Jude Society. She was also a member of the Hampton Women's Club, the Military Order of World Wars and the James River Hunt Club. Well known as the "cookie lady" or "Nurse Mary," she volunteered for more than 25 years as a nurse at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School. She loved to travel with friends, visit her grandchildren and swing on her backyard swing.
Preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. William L. Alford, USN, and her sister, Catherine Kelly Halloran, survivors include her children, Anne A. (John) Zawistoski of Proctor, Vt., Beth (Harry) Hutchison of Charlotte, N.C., John M. Alford of Hampton and Kelly (Susan) Alford of Hampton; her sister, Ann Kelly Dolan of Scranton, Pa.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will take place beside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
