U.S. Congressman. Born near Greenwood, South Carolina, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, served in the South Carolina State house of Representatives, (1939-40) and was a member of the South Carolina State Senate, (1941-42). During World War II, he served as a Corporal in the US Army Air Corps in the European Theatre. After the war, he was known for his work on military veterans and civil rights issues. In 1947, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress, serving until 1949, was again elected to the Eighty-second Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving (1951-74). He died at age 89 in Greenwood, South Carolina.
