Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. During the Civil War he served as a Captain in the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, as Colonel and commander of the 10th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, and as an Acting Inspector General on the staffs of four different Union Army generals (Philip R. DeTrobriand, Davis Tillson, Alvan C. Gillem and George Stoneman). He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the war”. After the end of the conflict he became a Brigadier General in the Michigan National Guard.
