Capt. Gideon Cobb, eldest child of Henry Cobb and Lois Hallet(t), b. of record Apr. 11, 1691 at Barnstable, Mass. He d. Feb. 22, 1759 at Canterbury, Conn., his gravestone read, transcribed and recorded prior to 1900 and printed in NEHGR 70(1916)46.

His given name on his gravestone is inscribed as "Gedion," an obvious transposition by the stone cutter for the usual spelling of the name Gideon, his name "Gideon" the name associated with him in the Canterbury and Stonington town and church records. Gideon was fourteen years old when his father Henry,2 Cobb (Henry,1) moved this branch of the Cobb family from Barnstable to Stonington, Conn. ["Henry Cobb dismissed to Chh in Stonington under the Pastoral care of Rev. James Noyes 9r (Nov) 5, 1705." (West Barn. Church Rec.)]

On Sept. 25, 1717 at Canterbury, Conn., Gideon m. Margaret Fish, dau. of the late John Fish, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Stonington, and stepdau. of Sgt. Samuel Cleveland of Canterbury. The Stonington record of the marriage misstates Margaret's surname as Cleveland whereas the Canterbury Church record of the marriage correctly states her maiden name as Fish. Gideon Cobb and "Margrett his wife" were admitted to the Stonington 1st Church on Oct. 19, 1718, and dismissed to the church at the "Canada" Society [aka Hampton, Conn.] June 12, 1726, where Margaret was admitted to the church at Hampton on July 31, 1726. Both were admitted to the church at Canterbury, Conn. in 1737.

Gideon Cobb and Margaret Fish had two known children, the eldest, Gideon Jr., born and bapt. of record at Stonington. Their second child, son Elkanah, is not of birth or baptism record at Stonington due to being during the time between the death of Rev. James Noyes and his successor when visiting pastors occasionally supplied the Stonington Church pulpit, but infrequently baptized children during their supply visits.

John Dyar and Abigail Fitch, and grdau. of Maj. James Fitch and Alice Bradford (Maj. Wm.,2 Gov. Wm.,1 of the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony), b. Apr. 10, 1718 at Canterbury. Nine children of the family.
