McALLEN, TX - Rachel Phoebe Farley, the daughter of Amos Roy (A.R.) and Alice (Kersey) Farley was born June 23, 1922, in Topeka, Kansas, and departed this life at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas, on July 22, 2013, at the age of 91.

Her father was a pioneer pastor in the Assemblies of God, and she moved with her parents to several communities in Kansas during her childhood. She graduated from Dighton (Kansas) High School in 1940 and traveled with her father in evangelistic meetings before she attended Zion Bible Institute in Zion, Illinois, one year and then Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri, where she graduated with a diploma in 1944.

On May 28, 1950, she was united in marriage to John Perry in Wichita, Kansas. They served pastorates for twenty-five years at Assemblies of God churches in Jetmore, Elwood, and Wellsville, Kansas, and Eldora, Hamburg, and Truesdale, Iowa. In 1975 she received a BA degree from Buena Vista University and in the fall of 1975, she began teaching at Independence Christian Academy in Independence, Iowa. She and Rev. Perry taught at Christian schools in Independence and Burlington, Iowa; Freeport, Illinois; Sanford, Florida; Laredo and Roma, Texas; and Miguel Aleman, Mexico, until they retired from teaching in 2004.

Rachel received the Lord Jesus into her life when she was a young child and loved and followed Him all her days. She extended practical care for the people God placed in her life and gave freely of her time and other gifts and resources entrusted to her. She was a member of the First Assembly of God in McAllen. After she and Rev. Perry retired, they did hospital visitation for the church and also helped lead weekly services at the Heritage Assisted Living Center.

She is survived by her husband, John, of McAllen; daughter, Sharon (Kenneth) Holmgren, of St. Paul, Minnesota; son, Forrest (Judy) Perry of McAllen; four grandchildren, Paul (Rose) Holmgren of St. Paul, Minnesota, Rachel (Jonathan) Larson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Samuel (Josie) Holmgren of Bacolod City, Negros, Philippines, and Philip (Barb) Perry of Sheridan, Wyoming; and eleven great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a brother, Forrest (Joan) L. Farley, of Joliet, Illinois; two sisters, Amy Strang of Longwood, Florida, and Una (Bob) Courtney of Kansas City, Missouri; and eleven nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her son Roy.

Visitation will be held today August 10, 2013 from 3-9 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Sunday August 11, 2013 at 4 p.m. at the First Assembly of God in McAllen. Burial will follow on Monday August 12, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Rio Grande Valley Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Pallbearers will be: Rufino Lopez, Israel Montoya, Don P. King, Dan Gorhum, Dr. John Abraham, Grady Curtis Long, Paul Ken Holmgren, David Paul Dunn, Faustino Salas III. Honorary pallbearers will be: Phillip Forrest Perry, Alexander James Perry, Jordan Thomas Allen, Joseph Charles Allen, Nathan Jimenez, Judah Grady Long, Edward Paul Holmgren, Jonathan David Dunn and Faustino Salas IV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the building fund of the First Assembly of God in McAllen or to the Missions Ministry of their grandson Sam Holmgren (checks payable to Kenneth Holmgren).
