Former Bishop of the Diocese of 's Hertogenbosch (Bois-le-Duc), Mgr. Johannes Zwijsen was a native of Tilburg. The first Archbishop of Utrecht after the re-establishment of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in the Netherlands, Zwijsen remains a prominent figure in the ecclesiastical history of his country. Founder of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady Mother of Mercy, a teaching order, he opened the Diocesan Seminary in 1857, organized the Cathedral Chapter of the Archdiocese the following year, and held the first Provincial Synod in 1864. Resigning from office in 1868, he retaining only the Bishopric of 's-Hertogenbosch, dying there in 1877. The crypt which houses his remains among those of his successor and other members of the local clergy, was built specifically for him in 1882.
