Anthony Eugene "Gene" Hinton of Bozeman and formerly of Cardwell, died Wednesday in the Gallatin Rest Home in Bozeman.
Gene was born March 4, 1922, in Ennis, to Hollie and Myrtle (Allen) Hinton. He lived on ranches in the Ennis, Cardwell and Willow Creek areas. He attended country schools and graduated from Ennis High School in 1939. He attended two years at Montana State Normal College in Dillon.

He then served in the Army Air Force during World War II. Upon his return from the service, he resumed ranch work and was a U.S. railway postal clerk. He then worked for the Ideal Cement Co. at Trident and helped organize the United Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers International Union AFL-CIO. He retired as a supervisor for Ideal Cement in 1968 and began working for the Indiana University Geological Field Station at Cardwell.

He married Lois Dutton on March 6, 1948. He enjoyed sports and hunting big game with his grandsons.

He was a school bus driver for Cardwell and Whitehall, a member of the Madison County Planning Board and Madison County Election Board, Mystic Tie Riverside Lodge 17 and Bagdad Temple of Butte.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois, who died on Aug. 4, 2005; brother, Clovis Hinton; sisters, Mildred Hinton, Freda Martin and Katherine Estes.

Survivors include his children, Sharon Hinton, Carlsbad, N.M., and Gary Hinton, Whitehall; seven grandchildren, Stacy and Gary Ingram, Gillette, Wyo., Travis and Nikki Sant, Missoula, Sarah Sant, Seattle, Darcey Sant, Seattle, Tyler Sant, Missoula, Hope and John Senzig, North Carolina, Dustin Hinton, Three Forks; great-grandchildren, Meadow Brooke Ingram, Destiny Sunset Ingram, Sydney Skye Ingram, Hailey Senzig, Chandler Senzig; and sister, Colleen Hinton Richards.

A combined memorial service for Gene and Lois will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the K&L Mortuary Chapel in Whitehall with the Rev. Linda Fritz officiating.
