In some researchers' records, we have seen a William referred to as "Daniel Baxley" being confused with this William, possibly in his wife's Venters family records (not sure why or where I saw that in Venters records), so watch out for that in doing research. These are different people and since both were possibly married to a Venters or Fenters wife they frequently get mixed up easily with researchers. Both died in the Civil War but are listed as two separate people. My great-grandmother was the wife of record because that is how they got the land grant to move to Florida after the war. Sorry I can not be of much help but a lot of errors have occurred. Looking at the whole list of children in the records will possibly help separate them because except for one William A., all the children's names were different in the two families.

On his wife Sarah Jane Venters Baxley's memorial page I have posted the following which gives more specifics about watching for the error some make:

(Researchers:-- be careful not to confuse this Sarah Jane Venters born in 1832 in North Carolina and who lived in Hemingway SC ......with another Sarah Venters who was born 1831 in Georgetown SC, lived in Georgetown (seen in the 1850 Census in Georgetown) and was married to a Daniel Baxley. Both these women had a son named William A. Baxley but the names of other children are different and that will help you differentiate. Both were married to Baxley men who died during the Civil War. I have seen family trees online and in Ancestry that shows the two Sarah Venters as having the same parents' names to add to the extent of the errors. Be careful what you find on Ancestry's site before you accept it as fact.)

This William's father was a John Baxley (probably John Barnabus Jr.) with a wife named Charlotte (maiden name unknown) and we know nothing else about them or where they are buried. (My brother Eugene's research had pointed strongly toward an Edmund or Edmond Baxley of Robeson County NC as possibly a father, grandfather or uncle of John, but an exact identity is unknown.) A relative of John could also be a Thomas Baxley. The connection to Robeson County NC is very strong. But as time goes on it seems that a John Barnabus Baxley (some say Jr.) might likely be his father, with a wife named Charlott or Charlotte. Our yDNA does match descendents of John Barnabus Baxley of SC.

Here is some general research help from one family resource on parents of Pvt. William James Baxley:
FATHER- John Baxley, born Bet. 1790 - 1799 in North Carolina; died Abt. 1835 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. He married Charlotte Unknown Abt. 1826 in North Carolina.

MOTHER- Charlotte Unknown, born Bet. 1804 - 1805 in North Carolina; died Bef. 1870 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.

Notes for Charlotte Unknown:
Charlotte apparently remarried a man named James Altman after John Baxley's death. Altman then died about 1848, and Charlotte was shown living next door to son William James Baxley and his wife Sarah Jane in the 1850 Williamsburg SC census. She was living with several minor Baxley and Altman children. There is a widows application for pension from Charlotte for James Altman, but it has no date and looks incomplete. Altman fought in the War of 1812. (I have attached a copy of it, as well as the mentioned 1850 Census page, in the overflow Photo section of this memorial page for her son William James Baxley.)

William had a sister named Sarah who married a John David Thompson. You can use the link under Sarah to see her memorial and more about her family.
