John "Mule" Frisby was born in 1835 at Big Wood Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. John "Mule" is the son of George and Catherine "Kitty" Sutton (married name from previous marriage, probably nee Cashen) Frisby. George Frisby is the son of John Frisby and Mary Gorman. John "Mule" Frisby married Anne Noonan at Johnsburg, McHenry Co., Illinois on April 20, 1865. It is unknown what year he arrived from Ireland, but it was perhaps around 1853 as this was the same year of his wife Anna's immigration. Little is known about his occupation in the McHenry area, however he did attempt to enlist for the cause of the Union during the Civil War but was rejected due to bad eyesight. As his great grandson, I have speculated that he suffered from the same diesease that I do, (Keratoconus). There were however no contact lenses for correction in those days. John did sign up as a teamster, hauling supplies to the Union troops. Apparently his team was composed of mules so he got his nickname.
