Richard E. SHAFFER, 70, of Hesston, died Aug. 11, 2003, at the Oaks, Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, following an extended illness.

Born Sept. 25, 1932, in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Elmer and Adelaide (Fink) Shaffer. He was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Grove April 23, 1955.

He is survived by his wife at home; two sons, Roger Shaffer and his wife, Cynthia (Forshey), of McConnellstown, and Gary B. Shaffer of Hesston; and a daughter, Brenda K. Reed of Petersburg. He is survived by five grandchildren: Shane M. Shaffer of Hesston, Justina M. Shaffer of Mifflintown, and Darius T. Reed, Desiree N. Reed and Derrick H. Reed, all of Petersburg; and one great-granddaughter, Victoria M. Garner of Mifflintown. Three brothers and one sister survive: Kenneth Shaffer of Smithfield and Mrs. Fred (Shelvie) Smith, Donald Shaffer and Carl Shaffer, all of Huntingdon.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Oasis of Love Church, Huntingdon. He was a member of the Lincoln Grange. He was a graduate of Huntingdon High School in the Class of 1950. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Shaffer served in the U.S. Army in the 1510th HQ Battery, 1st AAA Group, attaining the rank of corporal. He was the former co-owner and operator of Shaffer Sunoco in McConnellstown. He was once employed by the J.C. Blair Co. in Huntingdon and is successors Westab and Mead Products in Alexandria. He retired from Mead in the computer, shipping and printing department.

Funeral services will be held Aug 13, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home in Huntingdon, with the Rev. Myrna Speck officiating. Interment will be made in Grove Cemetery, Hesston.
