Anderson, John A.

John A. Anderson age 90, a life long resident of Manitowoc passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, August 8, 2013.

John was born May 21, 1923 in Manitowoc, son of the late Carl and Edna (Brune) Anderson. He attended schools in Manitowoc and graduated with the class of 1941 from Lincoln High School. John worked on the submarines for the U.S. Navy for about one year and in 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1945. After nine months John reenlisted and served in Korea until January 1954. On November 5, 1955 he married the former Carolyn Van Deuren in Two Rivers. John worked at Mirro Aluminum and later became a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Manitowoc until his retirement in 1985. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, golfing, watching the Packers and Brewers, and eating at Subway. John's greatest honor was being able to take the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Carolyn Anderson, Manitowoc; five daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy (Larry) Lau, Huntley, Il; Sue (Dirk) May, Normal, Il; Mary (Jim) Walters, Manitowoc; Julie (Don) Koeser, Two Rivers; Sally (Tony) Dick, Manitowoc; nine grandchildren: Stacie Walters (Tyler Blaha); Jason Walters and his fianceé Jessica Cerbellon; Jeanne (Jason) Hamilton; Dietrich (Amanda) May; Hudson May; Casey Koeser (Erin Meinholdt); Kaelyn (Memo) Lopez; Hailey and Sara Dick; one sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law: Elaine Barber; Dick VanDeuren; Phil VanDeuren; Norb Brey. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Charlotte Conard; Clara Brey; Ruth VanDeuren; Lucille Yindra; and one brother: Carl Anderson.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2013 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2601 South 10th Street, Manitowoc. Rev. Brian Staude will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Military graveside services will be accorded by the VFW Otto-Oas Post #659. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
