Elmer was born in Kansas. He operated a Livery Stable with his brother Samuel Orville. They would meet the train with a wagon and take them back to the stable to rent a buggy or horse. In 1911 the business was becoming less since the induction of automobiles. Elmer saw a flyer about a place called Pearland down in Texas. He rode an excursion train to Pearland to look at the land. He liked what he saw (no snow or really cold weather). He went back to Kansas and sold his interest in the livery stable and moved to Texas. Elmer was the father of William Collins (Bill). They farmed together in Pearland, Highlands, Trinity and Almeda. Elmer had 4 grandchildren, Liddie, Charlene, George Thomas (Tom) and Carolyn.
He is buried beside his daughter-in-law Mildred.
