Former State Assemblyman
Ray H. Schoonover, 70,
Ex-U.S. Marshal, Is Dead

Ray H. Schoonover, 70, former U.S. Marshal here from November, 1953, to August, 1961, when he retired, died today in a Madison hospital.

Mr. Schoonover served as state assemblyman from Green county from 1947 to 1949, and earlier had been Green county Sheriff from 1940 to 1944. A Republican, he was appointed U.S. marshal in 1953 by President Eisenhower.

For 21 years, from 1919 to 1940, he was a partner in the Schoonover-Voegeli Chevrolet sales and service firm at Monticello.

Born at St. Paul, Minn., in 1896, Mr. Schoonover was raised in Monticello, and graduated from the high school there 1915. Later he served in the Army in France during World War I.

He was married May 15, 1919 to Selma Babler of Monticello.

Mr. Schoonover formerly served on the Green County Fair board.

He was a member of the Monticello Masonic Lodge, Madison Consistory and Zor Shrine, and Monroe American Legion post. He was a former member of the Madison Kiwanis Club.

Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Richard R. Schoonover, Waukesha; two daughters, Mrs. A. Lawrence Sweitzer, and Mrs. John A. Steffen, both of Madison; a brother, William, St. Paul, Minn., and nine grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were to be made at the Voegeli funeral home, Monticello.
