Son of David Hufford and Mary Morris, George was born in Contra Costa County but spent nearly all his life in Humboldt County. He was the last child of seven children born to Mary before her death about 1870. His father remarried about 1871 to Mary Ann Melcher and she gave birth to six more children. In 1877 David relocated his family to Humboldt County living near Orick.

At the age of twenty-five George married Mary Jane ("Jennie") Babcock in Ukiah, California on October 29, 1893. They made their first home in Orick and the couple had nine children:

George owned and operated a meat market in Trinidad in 1899. He sold the successful business and worked for Ralph Bull as a cattle buyer, travelling throughout the northern counties of California. After three years, he tired of travelling and got a job as a liveryman for the McConnaha brothers (Cal and B.P., Sr.) in Trinidad which he did for seven years before deciding to go into business for himself buying the Bridgeville-Ruth Stageline.

The stageline route was located in the southeastern part of Humboldt County, an area with large sheep and cattle ranches, orchards and turkey farms. The stageline carried passengers and had a contract to haul mail and parcel post. To be nearer to work George bought a small farm and moved his family there.

George Hufford, as the mail carrier, had a very narrow escape in January of 1914 when trying to cross the ford on the Van Duzen River near Dinsmore's Resort. The winter rains had swollen the river and he, his wagon and team were washed down stream, but with the aid of W. Sprostan, who happened by on horseback he was enabled to gain the farther bank and proceeded to Kuntz.

George and his family liked the warmer and drier climate of the area and he continued to acquire land building up a large ranch which his sons and nephews helped to manage.

Following Jennie's death in 1922, George married Erma Gillespie on February 9, 1924 in Fortuna, California. Erma Gillespie was the daughter of Benjamin Gillespie and Mildred Mahurin.
