Robert Nielsen, age 96, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018, at his home.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, March 6th at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Rev. Ron Harris & Rev. Sarah Ruch will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 P.M. Monday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the family to designate at a later date.

OBITUARY: ROBERT NIELSEN

Robert E. Nielsen, the son of Sam and Marie C. (Gustafson) Nielsen, Sr., was born at Bellwood, Nebraska on February 26, 1922 and passed away in Aurora, Nebraska on March 1, 2018, at the age of 96.

He grew up on a farm near Marquette and graduated from Marquette High School in 1939. Robert served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He enlisted on December 16, 1942. He was honorably discharged on November 21, 1945 and had also bravely served as a POW.

On December 15, 1943, he was united in marriage to Bernice Ida Andersen at Medicine Lake, Montana. Early on in their married life they lived in several different cities and states; Sparta, WI, Marquette, NE, Billings, MT, Lawton, OK and Lincoln, NE. They made their home in Aurora in 1949 and have lived here ever since. Robert worked at L.P. Gas Sales and Service, delivering propane in rural areas. Bernice passed away on May 14, 2012.

Robert was a charter member and life time member of V.F.W. Post 4993, life member of American Legion Post #42, American POW’s and Cornhusker Chapter of POW’s. He was also a member of E.U.B. and later the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and seven siblings, Sam K. Nielsen, Jr., Guy W. Nielsen, Alice Andreasen, Margaret Creech, William Nielsen, Ann Rasmussen and Carol Farlin.
