Asturian Royalty. Born the son of Queen Gaudiosa and Pelayo, the first king of the Asturians. He succeeded to the title of King Favila of Asturias in 737, and that same year, he founded the Church of Santa Cruz, in his capital of Cangas de Onís. He was also apparently criticized for his “excessive levity” by chroniclers. Legend has it that during a royal hunt, he was killed by a bear after only two years upon the throne. He was buried beside his wife, Froiluba, in the church he founded, and was succeeded by his sister, Ermesinda, and her husband, Alfonso I. According to the foundation inscription of Santa Cruz, he left issue, but none took the throne. His name has also been recorded as Fafila, Favila, or Favilac.
