After his discharge he was asked to re-enlist in 1944 to participate in the campaign against the German forces that were conducting a major offensive through the densely forested Ardennes region in Belgium, France and Luxembourg on the Western Front. He was assigned to the 104th Infantry Division, in the 413th Regiment, known as the "Timberwolves". The "Battle of the Bulge" (16 December 1944 - 25 January 1945) involved 610,000 American men. Over the course of the 41 day battle the Americans suffered 19,000 killed and a total of 89,000 casualties. Germans casualties were over 100,000.
The Battle of the Bulge is considered the bloodiest battle for American troops in all of World War II.
