Actor. Born in San Francisco, California, he was a prolific character performer best known for his work in the films by John Ford and in particular, for his role of Pa Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940). He began his career in the Broadway Theatre in 1909 and made his motion picture debut in "The Virginian" (1914). In a career spanning nearly fifty years, his many credits include "Under the Lash" (1921), "Billy the Kid" (1930), "Frontier Marshal" (1934), "They Were Expendable" (1945), "My Darling Clementine" (1946), "Wagon Master" (1950), "Last Command" (1955) and "The Horse Soldiers" (1959). He died at age 79 in Woodland Hills, California.
