The trumpet audaciously sounded on Tuesday evening, May 24, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital and Rev. Dr. Curtis Lee Elliott made a peaceful transition from earth into the eve of eternity.

Dr. Elliott was born on June 27, 1928, the youngest sibling in a family of four brothers and five sisters. His parents, the late Charlie Cosby Elliott and Berta Stratton Elliott, knew from a toddler that he was destined to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Curtis was a precocious young man who captivated the hearts of his family and friends. He was an avid student and attended Campbell County Public Schools during his formative years.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Elliott was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ida Bolling Elliott, his only child, Raymond Lee Elliott, four brothers, Edwin, Armistead, Willie, and Floyd and four sisters, Gertrude, Elsie, Marion , and Cassie.

Dr. Elliott grew up in an era where he was taught that love, faith, and tenacity are the characteristics of a successful life. He was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1951. He embraced this opportunity with honor, enthusiasm, and resilience. He is known in the Ministerial Community, as a "Father", to many of his younger peers in the ministry.

Dr. Elliott has served as Pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Canaan Baptist Church, and Jordan Baptist Church in Appomattox County and Alabama Baptist Church in Prince Edward County. Under his leadership as pastor, every church has exceeded greater heights physically and spiritually. He was instrumental in witnessing the construction of new buildings at Alabama, Jordan, and Mt. Zion and the upgrade of the churches at Canaan and Morning Star.

Before Dr. Elliott started his studies in Theology and Biblical History at the historic Virginia Seminary and College, now known as Virginia University of Lynchburg, he mastered a course in Theology under the direction of Dr. Henry D. Boyd. Dr. Elliott received his Honorary Doctorate Degree from Virginia University of Lynchburg in 1994. He was honored by the University in 2010 for being a pastor for more than 60 years, and the oldest pastor in Lynchburg, Amherst, Bedford, and Campbell counties.

Dr. Elliott was currently pastor of Jordan Baptist Church, active in civic affairs, Vice President of the United Ministers Conference, Historian of the Elliott Family Reunion Committee, and was always willing to be the eyes, hands, and feet of his Lord and Savior whenever he was needed.

Rev. Dr. Curtis Lee Elliott leaves to celebrate his life, and honor his legacy a granddaughter, Raytosha Elliott; grandson, Rayphael Elliott (Joyce); two great grandchildren, Terike and Tamira Elliott; a daughter-in-law, Mary P. Elliott; his special daughter/niece, Eyvonne M. Green (Roy); a sister, Esther E. Garland; two sister-in-laws, Florence Elliott and Josephine Elliott; 65 nieces and nephews; 204 great nieces and nephews; 85 great-great nieces and nephews; a cousin, Nellie E. Joyner; his church families; his colleagues in the ministry; and numerous other extended family members and good friends.

In retrospect, many years from now Dr. Elliott will not be remembered for the material possessions that he acquired, but for the faith, wisdom, and tenacity he so valiantly shared. Some men are born into greatness, because of their name, Rev. Dr. Curtis Elliott was a great man, because God meticulously selected him to teach and to lead His people to the Promise Land.

Due to the arrival of his granddaughter, Raytosha, from the Dominican Republic the funeral will be held 2pm, Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Appomattox County High School. Interment will be in the Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, Spout Spring. The family is receiving friends from 7-8pm, Friday, June 3, 2011 at Jordan Baptist Church and other times at the residence of his daughter/niece, Eyvonne Green, 102 Miles Place, Lynchburg. Rev. Dr. Elliott will be on view starting Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Community Funeral Home. The cortege will assemble at 102 Miles Place. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected].
