Darren grew up in central Illinois and at a young age developed a love for camping, fishing and boating which he continued to do throughout his life.

He attended Jefferson Grade School, Washington Junior High School and Pekin High School. He participated in tap, acrobats and trampoline at Durr Dance Studio. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. He loved to roller skate and eventually worked as a skate guard at Pekin's Chink Rink. After high school, Darren worked for Good Samaritan nursing home, where he was loved by many of the residents. Later, in keeping with his love for the outdoors, Darren went to work for Golf Green and developed excellent skills in landscaping and lawn care. He later worked for Barr Landscaping.
