Shelby Ray Succumbs to Second Stroke of Paralysis.
The news of the sudden death of Shelby Ray, the well known postmaster at Monroe, was flashed over the telephones of the community and Monroe Sunday evening. Mr. Ray had a light stroke of paralysis last fall but soon recovered so that he was able to be about his duties and enjoyed fair health and had been as well as usual when the family retired Sunday evening. It was not long until he awakened his wife and asked her to assist him in turning over. His condition was at once surmised. He uttered scarcely another word. The physicians were summoned but were unable to loosen the death grip that had seized his body and the patient quietly departed this life about one and a half house after the attack, surrounded by his family and many friends who came to lend assistance during the last moments of the life of the one they had learned to love.
Mr. Ray was formerly a teacher in the schools of Monroe township having taught in all twenty-three terms of school in the township. During this time he spent part of the time in farming the farm that he owned at the time of death but now tilled by Joseph Durbin.
In January 1899 he was appointed postmaster at Monroe and at once assumed the duties of the office and has proven a constant and faithful servant of the people. At the same time he purchased a stock of drugs and has been engaged in business in connection with this duties as postmaster. During the fire at Monroe, March 3, 1905 his stock of goods as well as his residence property was destroyed but he at once planned a new business place which he had arranged nicely as a business room and a dwelling place.

Ray, was born in Monroe township, Adams county Indiana, May 23, 1867 and departed this life at his residence in Monroe, February 10, 1907 aged 39 years 8 months and 17 days. August 31. 1890 he was united in marriage to Alice L. Pogue. To this union were born three children, Wilda, Joseph F. and Wilford F. who with the wife and mother, one brother, William L. Ray, and his his mother, Mrs. Sarah M. Spence and a large acquaintance mourn his departure.
Mr. Ray was a member of the Modern Woodman of America and the Junior Order of American Mechancis.
In the winter of 1891 he was baptized and united with the Christian church which church he held his membership at the time of death.
The funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Monroe at 1 o'clock Wednesday and interment will be made at the Backesto cemetery. The services will be conducted buy Rev. E. L. Jones.
