James M. Kinzer, 91, of Crystal Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

He was born June 25, 1918, in Grinnel, Iowa, to Dr. Walton and Clara (Andrews) Kinzer. He married Mary Jaksetic on Nov. 3, 1943, in New York City.

He enlisted as an apprentice seaman July 10, 1941, and served on convoy duty on the East Coast. He was released from the service June 20, 1946. He was a student at Iowa State University and had worked as an electrician with Libby Owens Ford. He was a Boy Scout leader and a member of the Shriners, Royal Arch Masons in Ohio. He also was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Toledo, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, James (Susan) Kinzer Jr. of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Richard (Gina) Kinzer of Crystal Lake; his grandchildren, Christopher (Pam) Kinzer, John (Jessica) Kinzer and Lauren and Ellen Kinzer; and his great-grandchildren, Meagan, Morgan, Julia and Olivia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruth Kinzer Johnson.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry. Prayers will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the funeral home, proceeding for a 10:30 a.m. Mass celebration at Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
