John Robison Bryan enlisted with Company "F", 67th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He was killed September 11, 1862 at the Battle of Mumfordville, Kentucky. James R. Burcham of Kossuth, Indiana and John M. Reed of Gosper county, Nebraska made depositions in support of a pension claim (Mother's 469276) of Sarah Burcham Bryan who was a resident of Red Willow county, Nebraska in 1892 when the claim was made. The claim was rejected.

Find A Grave contributor Sandra Bryan Kovener (49951899) adds the following:
"Members of John's family who ended up in Nebraska showed me a letter he sent to his mom and dad shortly before the Battle of Mumsfordville, asking them to lease a piece of ground from a neighbor. He was about to come home and wanted to raise watermelons. Of course, he did not survive the battle."
