She was the daughter of Rev. Romeo L. and Jane Baber Melton. She graduated from Greensboro College in 1938 in elementary education and art. She taught sixth and seventh grades in Stoneville, NC. She married Fred P. Poole on August 9, 1941. They had five children: Martha, Mary Lou, Fred, Jr., Susan and James. Carolyn was active in the Moravian church, in genealogy, the NC Women's Club, 4-H and was a representative on the President's Council on Aging during the Nixon administration.
