Lillie "Jane" Barton
February 27, 1922 - July 31, 2013

The woods and streams of the Choctaw Nation in eastern Oklahoma were young Lillie "Jane" Ford's playground. Born to Joe and Stella Ford on February 27, 1922, times were not easy and money was scarce. But Jane never felt poor living in rural Oklahoma. With fish in the streams, plenty of wildlife in the woods and the freedom to explore her surroundings, life seemed rich to Jane. It was these memories of living so close to nature that was a constant inspiration to her and remained so for the rest of her life.

After relentless pursual, she finally agreed to marry Ed Barton, her high school sweetheart on July 6, 1940. Her first of three sons was born a year later. Life took her to a variety of places over the next several years including Southern California where she worked as a welder in the shipyards during the war. She returned to Oklahoma to live with her parents while Ed was in the Navy. Her second son was born during this time. After Ed's discharge, they moved to Lebanon, Oregon where their third son was born.

The years in Lebanon were a happy time. While Ed built logging and trucking businesses, Jane raised her three sons. Her parenting style mirrored the manner in which she was raised. She gave them the freedom to explore the Oregon wilderness. Many summer days were spent in a remote logging camp in the high Cascades. Jane was blessed with beauty and grace and her sons were very proud of her. Although activities around her family were her primary interest, she also enjoyed spending time with her many friends. Jane loved gardening, raising flowers, fishing and bowling.

Business interests drew the family to Coos Bay during the late 60's. Jane loved the feel of the woods and the sea there. She took to deep sea fishing for salmon along with her husband and sons. In the early 70's they moved to Eugene where they continued to expand the business.

As she came nearer to the end of her life, her mind began to slip away and returned more and more often to the wonderful childhood memories on her grandparent's farm back in the Choctaw Nation. Death came quickly and unexpectedly of heart failure on July 31. She died with her family by her side.

Jane leaves her devoted husband of seventy three years, Ed Barton; three sons: Dean, Glenn and Darrell; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren to carry on in this world. She joins her parents, her three siblings and a beloved granddaughter. Where there is beauty, she has found a home.

A Memorial gathering and reception will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, September 20, 2013 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Lebanon. A private family interment was in the Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is in care of final arrangements.
