Jane Conner was born in July of 1838 in Indiana to Joseph H. and Effie Conner or O'Conner. Her nickname was "Black Granny" and there are reports that she was part Native American. No documents, however, have been found that bear that conclusion. In every census found both she and her parents are listed as white.

She married Francis McNelons on 24 Sep 1858 in Webster County, Missouri. Her father officiated the ceremony. She had one daughter from the union, Effie Jane McNelons. Francis (or Franklin) abandoned his young wife and daughter and on 31 Mar 1860, she married Josiah Evans in Douglas County, Missouri.

Josiah and Jane had eight children, William Walker, Jody, Mary A., Thomas M., Rebecca A., Joseph E., an infant that did not survive, and Clarinda.

Jane died 26 Jul 1931 and is buried at Evans Cemetery in a grave marked only by a footstone.
