Nina Madge (Barnette) Carter

DUFFIELD, Va. — Nina M. Barnette Carter, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday (April 16, 2008) at her residence.

She was born in Blackwater, Va. on Jan. 7, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Rev. Billy Barnette and Cora Wade Barnette. She was a homemaker and attended Sloantown Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie G. Carter; son, David Carter; grandchildren, Anthony Carter, Allen Bowen, Keith Rains and Amy Sloan; sisters, Julie Benton, Bessie Sloan, Eugenia Gilliam, Ruby Pippin and Ruth Barnette; brothers, Elmer Barnette, Milford Barnette, Gale Barnette, Arthur Barnette and Worley Barnette.

Surviving are daughters, Thelma Rhoton, Gate City, Va., Betty Roberts, Bluff City, Marcelene Sloan and husband, Norman and Nell Bowen, all of Duffield, Va., Paulette Rains and husband, Harold, Gate City, Va., Brenda Gillenwater and husband, Larry, Kingsport; sons, James E. Carter and wife, Lorene, Gate City, Va., Wayne Carter and wife, Alice, Ft. Blackmore, Va.; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and other times at the residence, 1078 BeBe Branch Lane, Duffield, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Wrightly Salling, the Rev. Pat Hammond and the Rev. Aaron Edens officiating.

Music will be provided by True Faith and Jeff Crigger.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Carter Family Cemetery (1078 BeBe Branch Lane) in Duffield, Va. The family will meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Eddie Carter, Brad Carter, Michael Carter, Dwayne Rhoton, Jimmy Rhoton, Jeff Roberts, Steve Roberts and Greg Sloan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Carter, Brian Carter, Larry Gillenwater, Harold Rains, Mark Rhoton, Kim Curtis Rhoton and Norman Sloan.

The family would like to thank Miachele Katron, Laura Meade, and Sloantown Church and special thanks to Cindy Carter and Lila Hall.
